When the Porsche 911 (901) was launched, it featured a 2-liter Flat 6 mounted under the rear bonnet. Its architecture, combined with air cooling, will quickly give it a sound of its own and which will greatly contribute to its image.

After a few notable developments, aimed above all at increasing power, torque and improving carburation, Porsche is revisiting its Flat in depth to optimize it and give it more horsepower. Thus, the entire range will gain an additional 10 hp.
The 5-speed type 901 manual gearbox has a magnesium crankcase. As an option, the buyer can opt for the Sportomatic semi-automatic gearbox (Type 905) which works as follows: the clutch pedal is removed in favor of sensors in the speed control, so the gearbox engages each time automatically.
